I bought 3″ square craft mirrors at Hobby Lobby for $2.50 for a pack of 5. I figured that they’re cheap enough to experiment on and they’re the perfect size for the antique mirror project I have in mind. They are glass with a thin layer of red paint to protect the reflective surface. I soaked them for a couple of days in a mixture of bleach and water, I used about a cup of bleach in a gallon sized container.
As you can see, most of the protective paint layer started coming off just from soaking in the bleach-water. After a couple of days I took them out and washed them with water to see how they looked. As I washed them, most of the paint slid right off the back of the mirror.
