Cosmetic electro-therapy is a range of beauty treatments that uses low electric currents which are passed through the skin to produce muscle toning, and micro-lifting of the face. You can get these treatments at spas, and your local dermatologist, however, you can also do it in the comfort of your own home. Below we searched out many of these at home micro-current beauty systems, and included the customer reviews star ratings found on Amazon. Like any product, you won’t notice overnight results, but found that those who created a regular beauty routine using these systems, DO notice results in laugh lines, chin skin tightening, pore reduction, and general wrinkles. Review the comments, and decide if these systems are worth a try.
Some of the leading research in this field comes from Robert O. Becker and Dr Björn Nordenström, a former chair of the Nobel Selection Committee for Medicine, and Dr Thomas Wing, who invented some of the first micro-current devices.
Three Basic Electro Therapy Treatments
Galvanic Treatments– The treatment improves the skin by cleansing it, and increasing it’s circulation:
“Galvanism works by penetrating active substances into the subcutaneous tissues, where they act on the ineffective circulation to bring about an improvement in the vascular and lymphatic interchange in the area. This is completed in a natural and harmless way, and is aided by the actual effect of the galvanic current on the tissues. This improves the function of the cellular membrane, and allows the trapped fluid and fat to be dispersed and eliminated.” Ann Gallant, Body treatments and dietetics for the beauty therapist, Publisher Nelson Thornes, 1978,
Faradic Treatments– Tones the muscles by repeatedly contracting them with the electric current, resulting in their firming and toning, and an increase in muscular metabolism aims to remove waste products more readily.
Micro-current Treatments– use micro-ampere currents (i.e. millionths of an amp) which are hardly perceptible, but mimic the body’s own bio-electric currents. The treatment is designed to soften wrinkles and rejuvenate skin. This treatment was designed to treat skin damage by sunburn, acne, stretch marks, cellulite and scarring. When used on the face, the treatment has become known as a “non-surgical facelift”and “facial lifting”. Read more about this on Wikipedia

High Frequency D’arsonval Professional Grade Device with Argon Electrodes $139, with 71 product reviews on Amazon
- “Use for a facial massage for 7-10 minutes every other day for 8-16 consecutive treatments. After that one weekly treatment would be sufficient.”
- Is this device mainly for acne or is there a wand for wrinkle smoothing? Does anyone know if this device would be beneficial for that as well?
With regular use, high frequency skin care treatment can be very effective at reducing the size of enlarged pores, softening skin and controlling excess sebum production. The gentle spray of oxygen molecules produced by the high frequency current diminish enlarged pores by penetrating deep down into the root of the affected area and cleaning out unwanted debris and toxins allowing the pore to quickly regain its natural size once again. Fine Lines, Wrinkles, and Sagging Skin: The oscillating action of high frequency can increase blood circulation, which in turn nourishes the skin’s surface and renews underlying cells. It also produces an enriched form of oxygen, which can provide the skin with a firm, youthful, vibrant glow. It can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, tighten double chins and jowls and improve overall skin texture and tone by promoting increased collagen production.

- Can anyone tell me whats the difference between this and the other d’arsonval device? this is the link. “High Frequency D’arsonval Home Use Device NEW SPA ARGON“It seems like they both serve similar functions. The only difference is that the other one is much cheaper… almost $60 cheaper. Im kind of leaning on the less expensive one.
“Having NOT used the less expensive device, I really cannot tell you what the difference is. One is labeled proffessional and so I bought it hoping it would last longer. So far mine is fine. I believe the one I bought has more electrodes included. The frequencies may also be different. I am cautious though. As a person who has excessive hair growth on my face after menopause, some have said using these devices has actually promoted facial hair growth. So I use my device sparingly. I wish I could give you more of a definitive answer than I have”
“I think the less expensive one would be best for you. it has all the treatment tools you will need and should be easier to handle because of the shape and size”
“It seemed to provoke hair growth on my head, then on my FACE !As a woman, this isn’t an outcome that I want !”
- Does it help with dark circles around the eyes?
- Can be used in 220v or it is only for 110v?
- American plug (110 V.) or European plug: Does this come with a standard USA plug?
- I just bought this from you. what is each electrode used for?
- I am 65 and my facial skin is good, but I dislike my double chin. Does NuFace make enough difference to warrant buying it?
“Hi, Carol.. Well, it depends. The Nuface works the muscles underneath the skin. The microvolts actually exercises the muscles, improving muscle tone, which in turn can improve sagging skin somewhat. But you may also benefit from a firming cream, something that improves elasticity. Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL) works nicely, combining stimulating new collagen production with anti-inflammatory benefits. You can receive more intense IPL treatments from a physician or esthetician working with an MD, or less intense IPL treatments that are more gentle and do not require the oversight of an MD. From what I’ve learned, a multi-pronged approach may be the best way to improve skin quality and look younger!”
“NO. Not at all. Unfortuntely, the toning you need to “fix” that problem more than likely will have to come with a scalpel and surgery! The NuFace is just not designed for that level of fix. Don’t waste your money!”

For starters, I’m passionate about Microcurrent. After working in the cosmetics industry in the 80s, I’m a skincare & gadget junkie. I was unhappy with the original NUFACE and sold it on eBay after a few months of erratic use. It ate batteries and I couldn’t tell if it was functioning or not. Uncomfortable to hold, and gel was sticky, awful I also use Facemaster Platinum, and I found that to work great around the eyes and mouth but not the cheek/jawline/chin/neck.Last fall I started salon microcurrent treatments – now on maintenance, 1x mo. Just got the NUFACE Trinity on Amazon after reading positive reviews elsewhere. Still using FM for eye/mouth areas, but prime concern is jowls. I’ve had outstanding neck/jawline improvement from salon treatments – cheekbones especially – but need to maintain it, and this is where NUFACE shines. I don’t expect dramatic results from this one device since I’m already doing a lot – daily DPL red light therapy + 1-2x wk microderm with NuBrilliance (both from Amazon) and serious Perricone anti-aging regimen. Living in FL, I’m strict about high SPF sunscreen & hats. If you routinely expose your face/neck to the sun, smoke, or drink alcohol a lot, don’t waste your time/$$ with microcurrent. Also if you’re overweight, don’t expect microcurrent to be liposuction. Now I’m adding NUFACE Trinity daily after the light therapy. After two advanced-level treatments on high, I can say that I am very happy with this purchase. I can TELL the device is working, saw and felt some lift along the jawline. It’s comfortable to hold and the 5 sec beep is great; the gel is OK. Being rechargeable is HUGE. You know you are getting a good treatment with a full charge. And it will be great for travel, unlike FM.Expectations: microcurrent is stimulating skin’s natural collagen & elastin production and you *eventually* see firmer, thicker and therefore younger-looking skin, in addition to whatever lift you achieve. I turn 60 next month have always looked about 10 yrs younger, but now I have the skin tone/texture & cheekbones I had at 40. I’m less bummed out than when I turned 50! Microcurrent is essential and I’m really excited about the new Trinity. Still plan to use FM 3x/week on eyes. If you use Trinity daily, a 30 day return period should be adequate to see if it’s going to work for you. If you can’t commit to do daily for 30 days, rethink buying it.IMHO, if you just use NUFACE on your NECK, you will take YEARS off, NO MATTER your age. So many women have pampered the face, but their necks look AT LEAST 10 years older, sometimes more. GRAVITY. ALWAYS. WORKS. You need to work your neck, moisturize it, and keep it out of the sun (especially while driving!) $325 for NUFACE would be worth it just to keep your neck matching your youthful face. Ditto the hands.Cost: Research the cost of injections, facelifts, laser/thermage, even salon microcurrent in your area. $325 is like nothing in comparison. Your time is another story. You do have to invest that, and REGULARLY.UPDATE: After a couple weeks of regular use, I still love this device. So much improved over the first model, and the timing beep makes a huge contribution to ease of use. I do want to say that the new conductive gel is MUCH better than I thought originally and doesn’t dry all that quickly if you put enough on initially and work in the sections recommended.
Rejuvenique RJV10KIT Facial Toning Mask Kit $70 on Amazon
“By delivering a light pulsation from a 9-volt battery (included), the 26 gold-plated contact points inside this facemask gradually tone the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkling. The mask’s control unit has a knob that adjusts the pulsation intensity to suit individual preference. Though the mask is made of hard plastic, you can adjust the headband and extend key contact points by rotating them so you can fit the mask to any face size, both male and female. A booklet clearly explains how to use the mask, and a video is included for additional instruction. The basics, however, are easy to grasp. The 26 contact points cover 12 zones of the face. When it’s turned on, the mask activates the contact points in a particular zone for about 20 seconds, and then proceeds though the other 11 zones one by one, repeating the sequence four times. A full treatment takes about 15 minutes, and you may apply two treatments each day.”
- Face mask’s 26 gold-plated contacts tone skin with light energy pulsation
- Battery-operated (9-volt battery included)
- Knob adjusts pulsation intensity to suit individual preference
- Mask adjusts to fit any face size, both male and female
- Instruction video tape and contact toning gel included
Real Product Reviews:
- Odd-looking, but the RJV Mask DOES work! By Ms.Terry Ryder
I was surprised the tape didn’t offer more information about the whole line of Rejuvenique products or show a section of the infomercial so that we are reminded why we are subjecting ourselves to this ridiculous-looking device and why it is worth it.
As an ex-[champion]athlete, I have used Electro-Stim (E-S) devices many times for muscle and joint rehab after injuries, and for muscle spasms, so I am very familiar with its use.
The mask is a great easy solution for a face toning workout. I usually reset it and do 2 sessions in a row; however, I find any more than that gives me a headache. To minimize repetition, I will try to mention some things that other reviewers skim over. Please read the other reviews for the big picture (especially from the ones with several years experience), and notice the people who complained about it used it improperly or didn’t give it a chance to do its thing.1. Use it every other day at the most, so you have time to recover (just like any other workout-a muscle is a muscle!). Use it at least 2x/week (every 3 days or so) to maintain maximum results.2. The gel for the E-S electrodes is bascially el-cheapo K-Y jelly, which many of us already have in the nightstand.3. As others here have noted, Keep a finger on the knob! For best results, use the stimulation as high ‘As Is Reasonably Comfortable’ for each of the 12 areas. I found area ‘4’ between the eyebrows to be extremely sensitive, and sometimes (but not always) the areas around the mouth, when the current passes near the roots of the teeth. When it switches to the sensitive areas, I quickly turn it down to around 3 or 4, and then the less sensitive areas get it cranked back up to ‘7’ or so (10=limit).
5. Used properly, the mask is safe. Some people have mentioned getting ‘burned’ by the mask, but I wonder what they did to cause that? I assume they cranked it up all the way (or close to it), hoping for quicker results, and ignored the pain. Helloooo McFly…
6. Too bad Salton does not better support the product on their website. It would be nice to see an excerpt of the original infomercial and more Before & After pictures so one can stay more motivated to use the Product.
7. Try the Rejuvenique beauty products, too.
The moisturizers are pretty good with an excellent list of [largely natural]ingredients, and no added perfumes. (…)The only downside is that NO Expiration Date is shown on the tubes and containers, so I am not sure how fresh some of these discounted products are, nor how much it matters.
8. Medical Issues: Of course, Use caution with ANY E-S device if your body is injured, sick, or stressed in some manner. If you have medical issues, it would be worthwhile to ask your doctor if any great harm might be done by trying electro-stimulation [or TeNZ-type] device.
–Bottom Line: If it HURTS, don’t do it! [duh.]
8. Don’t plan on going anywhere for about 20 minutes after a treatment. You will have little red spots from the pressure points for a little while afterwards.9. Don’t forget that a facelift costs around $12,000, so this is a really cheap [but effective] alternative! At least it will delay the need for a surgical Lift.I hope this helps y’all!

You will have to keep your hand on the power adjust button because some parts of your face will be more sensitive than others. I turn down the intensity when it hits the bridge of my nose but when it is stimulating my forehead, and checks I crank up the intensity as high as I can stand it. Afterwards, my skin is tight, plump and glowing! I always do it before a big night out and I always get lots of compliments. When I am with friends my own age they marvel that I have no wrinkles because we are 49! This is my beauty secret. If I could get the Dr. Oz show to feature it then Loreal would have to start making the masks again and lots of them!! Maybe even at a cheaper price!!! Wouldn’t that be heaven on earth. Together the Rejuvenique facial toning mask and the Loreal Revialift mask are the dynamic duo!

I’m 34 and my face is in decent shape. I eat well, exercise, and use high quality face products (all Perricone and Bobbi Brown) and regularly get facials, peels, etc. I bought this because I am interested in buying a larger microcurrent device (Perricone raves about them in ‘Forever Young’) and I wanted to first experiment with a less expensive option.I’ve been using this twice a day for 15 minutes at a time. I use unscented aloe vera gel as the conductivity cream and typically have to reapply it about 4 times per session. The little monster is STRONG. It has 5 levels, and at level 4 I get muscle twinges and at 5 I experience large contractions and burning so I don’t go up that high.I apply approximately 5 strokes below the eye in an outward motion, then above the eye, then switch sides, then repeat several times. I mix it up with some strokes above and outside my mouth to give my eyes a break, but that area doesn’t seem very responsive, I think because the tissue is thicker and it requires a stronger microcurrent machine.
Quite soon after using it, I noticed the skin around my eyes and nose thickening a bit – in a good way – and my capillaries became less visible. HOWEVER, and HERE’s MY MAIN TIP: I didn’t notice extreme eye lift benefits until I began positioning the device at the INSIDE CORNERS OF THE EYE, RESTING AGAINST THE NOSE. I’m not sure why, but when I extended my strokes a bit, beginning at the very inside corners, with one metal probe just above the corner of my eye and the other one below – and then proceeded with the same strokes (inside corner, glide down 1 inch, glide outwards three inches) – the results were remarkable! It is as though the puffiness and darkness have been “pushed” out. No eye cream has had this effect. I still wake up with under-eye circles (seems like I developed there around age 31 or so; I’m hoping this will lessen as I continue using the massager), but by mid-day, once my fluids have circulated, the entire area by my eyes is smooth and beautiful!
I’m really optimistic about this product, since I’ve already seen great benefits and the results are cumulative. My eye area hasn’t looked this good in 5 years, literally (I went back and looked at photos). Yay!!
I will DEFINITELY buy the larger version. I’m a little bit concerned that the lifting effect of the standard microcurrent will make my face look round, due to pushing up the skin. The one thing I LIKE about aging is the newly discovered contour and shading around my cheekbones. We’ll see. I will certainly write another review once I’ve been using it a while.
One other thing: There’s no way I’d be able to sit there twice a day for 15 minutes without another activity going on. I choose to listen to hypnosis and/or affirmations with headphones. I’d imagine other people could listen to the daily news or meditate, or whatever else you’d like to incorporate into your daily ‘wellness’ routine. I’m single without kids, so it’s easy for me to make the extra time. I have 2 sisters with kids and it’s a bit hard for me to imagine them finding time to incorporate this habit, but who knows? I certainly hope it will be part of my routine for years to come!!

I have had this device for 3 months and wanted to wait a few months before reviewing it. After reading some poor reviews today, I wanted to weigh in on actually how to use the device to get great results…
Firstly, if you research Microcurrent Facial therapy, you will see that oil and Microcurrent dont mix – so using oil-based creams or Aquaphor will prevent conductivity. Use the gel that it comes with, a water-based serum or just a lot of water on your skin.
Use the NuFace diagrams for contouring – always lifting the device in an upwards motion, never down. Using the previous reviewed top of placing the nodes close to the inside of the orbital bone (close to your nose – but never on your eyeball – place on the bone) and sweeping the device in an upwards motion to your temple will sculpt the eye/brow area beautifully. The smaller size of this device really lets you get into the eye area, the NuFace device does not. Holding it in place for 5 seconds over an area you really want to lift, to train those muscles, is also helpful.
The results of using this device over the past 3 months have been truly amazing – lifted jowels, high cheekbones and a tighter, smoother skin appearance. The skin around my eyes is tight and lifted as well. The benefits of using it 3/4 times a week have been decreased pore size and fresh, wide-awake look that is naturally…me! Not a frozen version that looks unnatural. I’m in my mid-40s and have been asked “What are you doing to your face” lately by close friends and family! The stimulation of collagen and muscles that were slack have now lifted my face and have changed the surface of my face and neck dramatically. This is something that I will use forever to fight gravity and keep the collagen renewal process going – it is a wonderful, natural complement to any skincare regimen….from the inside out.

Just got this device, and tried it out. So far, it feels close to microcurrent treatments I have had in the past. I used aloe vera gel, and had to reapply a few times. The directions are ok, if they were better, I would give it 5 stars. I know this device is smaller than NuFace, although with NuFace, you may not use it in the eye area. I thought it was because of the circular muscles around the eye need a different type of microcurrent machine with separate probes. I didn’t feel any tightness in my eye area, but definitely felt it in my brow and cheek area. If anyone knows about the circular muscle issue, I’d love to know!
Update: I’ve been using it at least once a day. I tried a few different creams, but always go back to to aloe vera gel, as it conducts the current the best. I keep it at 2 as anything higher is too strong for me. I also use the NuFace pattern for the face, and it definitely works with this device. And my eye area feels much tighter.
I have a lot of allergies, so my face can get puffy. A few of my friends have been asking if I lost weight because my neck and face is firmer, and my eyes are much less puffy. Truly a great bargain.

- Microcurrent is better than Microdermabrasion.
- Galvanic Skin Treatments Right at Your Fingertips!
“The Beauty Ion Pro Traveler is a small portable galvanic machine which can give you a refreshing facial ‘maintenance’ treatment within 20 minutes, at home or ‘on the go’. This easily adjustable unit can provide results equivalent to the professional units (Ion Pro Standard and Deluxe Models) but requires 2-3 times the overall investment of treatment minutes (40-60 for a complete aggressive facial). It is generally intended as an ‘in between’ or maintenance application (as compared to the Beauty Ion Pro Professional Line) and is a must-have for anyone who is serious about anti-aging skin care. Galvanic Skin Technology Explained: The Beauty Ion Pro machine emits safe high frequency electric currents through the anode (+) and the cathode (-). These positive and negative currents stimulate regenerative processes in the skin for a healthy, youthful appearance. The galvanic technology used by the Beauty Ion Pro has been scientifically recognized to improve the skin by reducing fine lines and sagging skin”

This conversation comes from a question “Has anyone used the Ezzi-Lift Microcurrent?”– Essential Day Spa
Ezzi-lift Machine Review – Member MACrisis Essential Day Spa Forum -“I have wrinkles, hyperpigmentations and some other skin issues but I think sagging, especially the laugh lines are my biggest enemy. Stopped all tools I have for almost 1 year and lately I bought the eZZi-Lift and tried it last night…… the microcurrent is so strong. It has 4 modes: Face Stimulation Mode, Face Smoothing Mode, Eye Stimulation Mode and Eye Smoothing Mode. It came in with 3 attachments: Blue Finger Probes (massage the whole face), Pencil Probe (spot treatment), Y Probe (spot treatment). You don’t need any attachment to use the machine. In the back of the handheld there’s a metal part and you can just glide it on your face. I tried all attachments and used the Blue Finger Probes for about 20 min. You don’t need any gel to use the machine but it’s really hard to glide so I used an ultrasound gel. …….., it was so strong and I can not pass to the 2nd level (5 levels). The gel did increase the power”
Ezzi-lift Machine Review – Member MACrisis Essential Day Spa Forum “I bought Nu Face and returned it after few weeks. I also own a “salon” microcurrent machine http://cgi.ebay.com/Microcurrent-Faradic-Facial-Lifting-and-Toning-Machine-/400136884129?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Skin_Care_test&hash=item5d2a044fa1#ht_5386wt_942 Plus other handheld home use microcurrent tools (with other functions, LED, Ion…..). Ezzi-Lift’s level 1 is stronger than Nu Face’s strongest setting. The “salon” one is too complicated and I had problem using both of my hands and looking at the mirror at the same time. Mixed up left and right, up and down, if you know what I mean. Ezzi-Lift with 3 attachments are $600. Some sellers sell the main unit only for $545″
Keliu Member Essential Day Spa Forum- “I also have that exact same “salon” microcurrent machine – I gave up on it too. Too tiresome and cumbersome to use on yourself. Plus, I was never sure which was the negative and which was the positive probe. I wonder how the Ezzi-Lift compares to the Nuskin Galvanic Spa? I don’t seem to get any results from these devices – I’m about to give up on the Slendertone Face. Sometimes I think I should go and have a professional treatment and see if I get any results from that, just to compare”
Miss Tina Essential Day Spa Forum “I do all these advanced treatments at the spa and I freaking love the microcurrent/Galvanic machine. It helps me get comedones(galvanic) out as well as put product into the dermis(intophoresis). I know that when this is done right, you can definitely tell a difference. But with anything, if you overdo it, you skin will get taxed. Everything is great with moderation. I definitely get a Multivitamin antiaging facial mask with the intophoresis once a month and I glow”
Joanie 04 Essential Day Spa Forum “I’m really late to this post but there are a couple questions I think I can answer. Cost of ezzi-lift depends upon which model you buy. Basically $350 or $650 depending upon which version. (Similar device at Norstroms is about $800 and doesn’t offer as many options.) Go to to the Avazzia website to see units and accessories. Ezzi-lift has four settings — if the face stimulate setting is “too strong,” move to eye stimulate or even eye smooth. You could also use it for a shorter time. I do agree it’s not as much fun to give yourself a facial as to lay in a quiet room with a water fountain burbling in the background and have someone make you beautiful. But in cities, a facial with microcurrent starts at $150. You can see how ezzi-lift will pay for itself REALLY quickly. Don’t use cream or any type of lotion with the ezzi-lift (you of course may moisturize after treatment). The device is absolutely made in the U.S. and serviced in U.S. If you have any questions, you may call the office (in the U.S.) and talk with one of the company reps. Thanks!”

- Does product really work?
“The product does help, but you have to be consistent. When I started I tried the smaller spring, but I noticed it didn’t really have any tension so I switched it to the medium spring, and I started to feel like I was actually working my neck muscles, but now I am using the large one that one works out your neck and chin muscles. My friend who got this product had to start with the large spring so she can feel like she was working her neck muscles so you’ll have to see which one will work for you to start, but consistency is key. My friend now does it twice a day, and I believe she does more reps than what the instructions tell you. You can adjust the times you do it for what you works for you”

The Neck Toning gadget includes three levels of resistance springs. The first 2 were OK, but when I tried the third level, the spring got stuck and did not move at all. I checked it a few times to make sure it’s installed properly, but nothing doing, still didn’t move at all.
Another problem is that a few days after starting the exercises I had horrid headache and fatigue that lasted 3 days. I usually never have headaches and this was so severe that I was immobilized for 3 days. Luckily I had a dentist appointment a few days later and asked him about it. He said the exercises hurt the muscle connected to my TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) and I should do neck stretching instead of the exercises.
