Painted Chippendale Furniture – How To Transform It.

Chippendale furniture is a highly decorated style, seen in the third quarter of the 18th century and named after the English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale.

This was actually the first style of furniture in England named after a cabinetmaker rather than a monarch.

” Chippendale ” comes from a book of furniture designs, that was published in 1754 in London and called The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director.

Thomas Chippendale’s designs became quite popular on the European continent, and in the American Colonies.

Here are some looks to inspire you, if you decide to invest in this style of furniture.

Looking at this style, the Chippendale designs fall into three main styles: Gothic, Rococo and Chinese.

Chippendale blended these disparate stylistic elements into harmonious and unified designs. The term Chippendale specifically refers to English furniture of the 1750s and ’60s made in a modified Rococo style.

Rococo Chippendale was designed to pivot from the heavy Baroque furniture design at the time.  Much of the Rococo designs were French, but Chippendale modified the looks for the English market, and that is why you see some of his designs based on the Louis XV designs.  Some of the most elaborate Rococo designs were carved and gilded like the mirror frames you see in many magazines paired with this style.

Chippendale designs were applied to china cabinets, or china shelves.  You will often see tea tables paired with this look.   Pieces in the Chinese Chippendale style are often paired with designs like chinoiserie wallpaper, or furniture coated with oriental-style lacquer.
